1. Make Safety Your Top Priority 

Your health and safety are always our main concern, especially during home infusion therapy. Here’s how you can help create a safe environment at home: 

  • Set up a clean, clutter-free area for your infusion with ample space to work and move around. 

  • Arrange furniture for easy navigation to help prevent trips and falls. 

  • Keep pets out of the infusion area. Pet fur and dander can introduce contaminants that put your PICC line and medication at risk. 

  • Post emergency numbers in an easy-to-find spot and ensure family or caregivers know how to contact your healthcare team in case of any issues. 

  

2. Don’t Skip a Dose 

Following your prescribed Plan of Care is essential to your healing. Missing even one infusion dose can reduce the medication's effectiveness and prolong your treatment. 

To stay on track: 

  • Set reminders or alarms 

  • Ask family or caregivers to help you stay accountable 

  • Stay in regular communication with your healthcare providers 

  

3. Practice Infection Prevention 

Infection control is critical with home infusion. All medications are carefully prepared in a sterile environment—it's up to you to keep that same level of cleanliness at home. 

Here’s how: 

  • Wash hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap before and after infusions. 

  • Use alcohol swabs as instructed. 

  • Keep your PICC line clean, dry, and intact at all times. 

  • Report any swelling, redness, or discomfort to your nurse right away. Home health nurses will also assist with dressing changes and check for complications.
